Philippine Airlines (PAL) is stretching its wings to fly high and far into the world map, especially the US. And why shouldn’t it? After all, there are millions of Filipinos living in America. In October, PAL started nonstop flights to Seattle from Manila, making their direct US gateways count to 6. The excitement and joy has still not waned among Filipinos; PAL is giving them more reasons to cherish. Now the airline has announced its expansion plans for the USA to Philippines nonstop flights network with focus on Houston, Chicago, and Las Vegas in 2025.

Currently, Philippine Airlines boasts a whopping market share of 40-50% in the US-Philippines travel corridor. It aims to further increase its market share by expanding its US network both through direct/indirect flights and codes-haring. PAL has picked Chicago, Houston, and Las Vegas strategically as these cities house hundreds of thousands of Filipinos. Let’s see what numbers have to say:

  • Chicago: One of the top cities for Filipino Americans, with approximately 145,000 Filipinos living in the Chicago metropolitan area.
  • Houston: A major hub for Filipino Americans! The state of Texas houses more than 222,000 Filipinos, mostly concentrated in and around Houston, thanks to its size and diversity.
  • Las Vegas: A great number of Filipinos (around 147,000) reside in the Las Vegas metro area due to ample employment opportunities in the hospitality and service industries.
If things go as planned, PAL will become the first airline to launch non-stop flights to the Midwest US from Manila International Airport. Filipinos from the Midwest states will be able to book nonstop flights between Chicago and Manila. This will also result in a direct competition with EVA Air flights to Manila from Chicago O’Hare via Taiwan. Likewise, those traveling from Houston to Manila will get to choose between EVA Air’s one-stop flights or the upcoming nonstop service by Philippine Airlines.
To execute its ambitious US network expansion plans, Philippine Airlines is investing in the fleet upgrade. Starting in 2025, the airline will welcome Airbus A350-1000s into its fleet. Equipped with state-of-the-art Rolls Royce engines, the A350-1000 is bigger and more powerful than A350-900,  which makes it suitable for some of the world’s longest routes. Also, these aircraft have better fuel efficiency, provide ample space in premium travel cabins, and accommodate more passengers than A350-900, thereby reducing the seat-mile cost by 15-25%.
